About The Suwanee Area

Named for a Shawnee Indian tribe that settled in the area in the latter part of the 18th century; Suwanee, Georgia is a wonderful place to call home. In fact, a wonderful home is just one of the things Suwanee has been called. In 2003 Georgia’s Municipal Association and Trend Magazine named Suwanee a “City of Excellence”. That was followed by Money Magazine in 2007 naming this one of the top ten best places to live. Kiplinger followed up by naming it the third best place in America to raise children. And just recently in 2013 Family Circle Magazine named the area one of the nation’s top ten best towns for families!

Lots of people seem to agree, as the population around Suwannee real estate has doubled in the last 10 years. Half of households have children under the age of 18. All this from its small beginnings in 1837 when it was first officially recognized by the US government.

Where To Play

From 1979 to 2001 Suwanee was the practice home of the Atlanta Falcons. These days there are many parks that all the resident families enjoy on a daily basis. The focal point is Town Center Park, a 10-acre park on Buford Highway and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road that holds the communities special events. There is a 1000 seat amphitheater that has concerts and other events as well as Big Splash Fountain. Big Splash has 43 jets and uses 1,400 gallons of water a minute (which is recycled).

Suwanee Creek Greenway is a hard-surfaced multipurpose trail that winds through four miles of wooded terrain. It connects to Suwanee Creek Park, an 85-acre park. In 2004 Playtown Suwanee (or the playground that Mom and Dad built) was built by volunteers and is a wonderful playground for the young (and young at heart).

Sims Lake Park was added in 2008. A beautiful setting for walking around a 7-acre lake on a trail that takes you through Japanese Gardens and other flora and fauna. There are also pavilions that can be reserved for small gatherings.

The ballgames are happening at George Pierce Park – a 300 acre park with ball fields, a fishing pond, soft-surfaced trails, picnic areas, outdoor basketball and a senior center.
